Sambhar Rice

Sambhar Rice is a staple household food for Tamilians. The vegetables and legumes cooked to tender in a spicy broth, giving it a texture of a thick stew. We’ll have a look at how to cook Sambhar Rice.

Cooking Sambhar Rice

  1. Wash together 1 cup rice and ½ cup arhar dal (tuvar dal or pigeon pea lentils) multiple times in water. Channel all the water and include both rice and dal in a pressure cooker.
  2. Season with ¼ teaspoon salt.
  3. Add 3 cups water and one teaspoon sesame oil.
  4. Pressure cook for 15 to 16 minutes on medium flame.
  5. When the pressure settles down on its own, remove the lid and check if the rice and dal are cooked together.
